Open innovation and IPR

Open innovation has become a rallying cry for managers and innovation researchers alike, though there are doubts expressed as to the scope of this term, and the prevalence of the practices referred to. Intellectual property issues are often raised as factors to consider in the context of open innovation – they certainly appear frequently in the literature on interfirm collaboration – but there appears to be little evidence (or even systematic thinking) on the relation between these fields.

A two day workshop for early career researchers, held on January 26th and 27th 2009 in Manchester, was an opportunity to focus on the interrelations of Open Innovation and IPR.

In order to recruit relevant contributors, INNO-Grips announced an open call for presentations and papers to contribute to this two day workshop. Doctoral and post-doctoral researchers were invited to submit details of a presentation and an abstract of a short paper. These presentations had to address any one of the following three topics:

• IPR Frameworks - Role in Innovation (Open and Traditional)
• Strategies of Innovation Actors
• Policy Actions
